解放前陕甘宁陇东地区，在人民政府的教育和倡导下，寻常百姓的民主意识逐渐加强。农家少女刘巧儿（新凤霞 饰）人如其名，心灵手巧，貌美如花，纯朴善良。她自幼竟父母包办许配给邻村赵家庄的赵柱儿，但是巧儿在劳模会上喜欢勤劳憨厚的小伙子赵振华（张德福 饰），于是心中暗下决定，要回家敦促父亲退掉婚约，自主结婚。与此同时，大地主王寿昌垂涎巧儿美貌，遂怂恿刘媒婆找到巧儿爹刘彦贵。巧儿爹贪图王财主的财礼，故在女儿面前谎称赵柱儿是个不学无术的二流子，此言甚合巧儿之心，于是赵刘两家婚约取消。但是巧儿很快便得知父亲将自己许给了王财主，而她和赵振华的误会也终于大白天下…… 本片根据1943年袁静剧本《刘巧告状》和说书演员韩起祥的说唱《刘巧团圆》改编。。Almost a year has passed since Ellen Parsons left Hewes and Associates.
